Hi MakeShift! I'm Mike with FANDOM's Community Development team. With the upcoming release of Krypton, I would like to offer my help in building out the main page in time for Wednesday's premiere which would include a character gallery, social media links, etc.
I would also like to start building the character pages. I know from previous experience with the wikis you run or are involved in (Arrowverse, Black Lightning) that you do not like to have character pages created until the show actually airs.
While I understand this position to some degree because character information can change from conception to broadcast, I think that this close to transmission the character articles can be safely created. Ideally, Krypton Wiki should be the go-to place for all information on the show. With this in mind, I would like to start the pages off with a basic infobox, image, and any official information released by SyFy. I can even protect them from editing so they are static until the show airs.
The other option is to do what I did on the Black Lightning Wiki and create the character articles as subpages, and then have them moved to the mainspace once the show airs. This has the benefit of having pre-built articles ready to go once the show begins.
I actually had begun to create a main page, though I got a bit busy, so any and all help is more than welcome.
You're welcome to add the central cast's character pages if you like, I'll even do it if I get a chance, along with citation. I'm feeling pretty lax so I don't mind considering we're so close to airing.
I've made some additions to the Seg-El page and referenced everything -- all the information comes from the SyFy official site. Hopefully this is the best way to go forward so that all the information can be seen as accurate.
Of course! That's the fun part about wikis, but I always like to be as accurate as possible when it comes to sourcing. I started off over on Wookieepedia and accurate sourcing has been ingrained into me over the years!
I feel the same way! Especially when there is a particularly important or interesting piece of information and you want to know where it originally came from, but since there's no sourcing you don't know if its accurate or not.
When working on comic adaptation wikis, I only like to use the facts I can confirm from the show or movie itself, and not assume things from the original source material unless explicitly stated or referenced.
I've created all the character pages, including one for Kal-El. I assure you that the page will definitely be relevant to the show, and I've only used information from entries on the official site.
I'm also going to put up pages for certain other things like the guilds and families, and hopefully Krypton and Kandor as well.
Oh for sure, I know you're big on accurate information, your history as an editor definitely precedes you. Just pointing out how terrible it can get on those sort of wikis, it can be a real pain haha. The guilds and families I'd say hold off on, unless you can provide a decent amount of information, as there doesn't seem to be a whole lot to go on thus far in regards to those things.
I created the house pages for now, because I think there is a decent amount of information for now. But I agree with the guilds since there is only about two or three sentences so far. The good thing is they have some nice images on the SyFy page for eventual inclusion on the site.
This fledgling wiki will only come into the light in the next couple months. There are high hopes for the success of the series and for this wiki. Seeing as you're retiring from editing, I find I have an interest in SyFy programming and in the DC universe and noticed your wiki.
With your consent, I'll start adding a couple of structural pages to this wiki.
I realize on Arrow you don't have the same structure as on The Expanse so I haven't worked everything out yet. I figured you'd prefer to keep it closer to Arrow.
What I was first going to try and do was listings of episodes, some templates, cast, crew, ...
Then background images, CSS styles.
Not sure if you wanted to use the same character descriptions that are being used by the Wikipedia page. I haven't gone through much of their promo videos.
If possible, it would be good to have character pages for everything so that when people watch the show and start googling characters, they start seeing stuff from this wiki. I figure there ought to be a target number of articles to create visibility. Perhaps, between 100 and 200 pages for now.
Perhaps, we can gleen some character images from promo materials before the show starts airing. At the least, more video links.
Of course, I'd prefer to be more like Arrow due to familiarity, also as I've very much tried to design it so as to be the most effective way to do it. I'm often averse to creating character pages before episodes air, largely due to inconsistencies in pages (eg. there being a mystery character in a show, but that's been spoiled in the news, so that's not reflected in the content of the pages). Though I do understand your intention, of course. If we're to add character/location/et cetera pages right after the episodes air, surely it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
I see the wiki as a means to keeping the audience's attention. A delay between the airing of an episode and the creation of the page is a missed opportunity that would have allowed the wiki to hold onto the attention of the peak of impact immediately after the show and diminishes the effectiveness.
on the other hand, having an incomplete or inaccurate article has consequences too. the worst is a blatantly inaccurate and rushed article. personally, I'd prefer to have a clean stub than to have no article at all for characters which have been publicized particularly via casting announcements.
I don't know how you avoid inconsistencies on a wiki. It's sort of an iterative effort that succeeds over time with small additions and small corrections. usually, no first effort is perfect. discouraging new content for fear of inaccuracies leaves the wiki looking a bit like a barren abandoned ghost town and uninviting or daunting.
if you want to hold off completely on character pages as your policy, it's your call.
I'm an old school believer in just trying to keep an accurate and maintained wiki; if we happen to have the audience's attention, then that's awesome. Of course, I understand your point on an article being rushed, but that's up to us to ensure that it isn't.
As for inconsistencies and inaccuracies, of course they're inevitable, that's the entire point of a wiki, but inconsistencies in the grander scale, in relation to upcoming episodes, that's my problem. It's not a matter of discouraging new content for fear of inaccuracy, but inconsistency if anything, which isn't a matter of adding content, but almost adding too much content, as it were (if that's maybe even possible).
I had started the season page to document all the news and information about production that didn't belong to a single episode. you don't use it that way and i find that stuff useful so having one place instead of several is handy.
How do you feel about creating articles for all the houses of Krypton known to this show so far?
Well you hadn't as yet added any substantial production info to it, but you're welcome to add it to the "Krypton" page itself, so long as it works being there. I find casting information isn't incredibly necessary, unless perhaps they're a part of the main cast, in which case it's prominent enough to warrant being there.
As for the houses, we don't know yet whether the whole "houses" thing is as prominent in this adaptation as other depictions to warrant those sort of pages, not to mention particularly the Da house we only know of because of a photo of a single character within it, and that's all. So I'm not really inclined to create pages yet (if at all, though that remains to be seen depending on how the show portrays it).
