For the episode, see The Phantom Zone.

The Phantom Zone is an interdimensional realm existing outside of space and time.

Description[]

The Phantom Zone appears as a disorienting realm of mirages and whispers, constantly projecting glimpses of potential futures in the real world.

History[]

Prelude[]

Val-El created technology to travel into and through the Phantom Zone, using it to find other galaxies throughout the universe.[1]

Season 1[]

"The Phantom Zone"[]

Dru-Zod revealed that Val-El did not perish, but rather escaped into the Phantom Zone, and he encountered Val and betrayed him, stealing his device to escape and leaving him behind. Realizing that Val might be needed to save Kandor from Brainiac, Dru brought Val out of the Phantom Zone. Later on Dru attempted to bargain with Brainiac for the preservation of Krypton in exchange for Val and his knowledge of the future, and although Brainiac agreed, Brainiac was sent into the Phantom Zone by Seg-El before he could capture Val, drawing Seg into the Phantom Zone along with him.[2]

Season 2[]

"Light-Years From Home"[]

Once in the Phantom Zone, Seg wandered aimlessly, tormented by the potential futures he sees in the Zone. Appearing before Seg disguised as a "hallucination" of Val-El, Brainiac convinced Seg to use his sunstone to open a wormhole into the real world, revealing himself to Seg just as they are both drawn back out of the Phantom Zone.[3]

Trivia[]

  • In DC comics, the Phantom Zone is a prison-like parallel dimension and is mainly associated with Superman stories. It first appeared in Adventure Comics #283 (April 1961), created by Robert Bernstein and George Papp. Many of the known Kryptonian villains were inmates of the Zone, such as General Zod, Faora, Jax-Ur and some other non-Kryptonian villains. The nature and the function of the Phantom Zone varied throughout the decades in the comics and media adaptations.
